music for specific programs

As we all know, it’s always nice for a concert program to have some kind of theme combining the different pieces. Here, I want to share some of my ideas from the past:

”Silly Love Songs”: That’s obviously the easiest one to fill with music. You’ll find loads of it through the centuries. Here are some from my catalogue:

Silly Love Songs; Fields of Gold; Stuck with You; If I Ever Lose My Faith in You; You Win Again; Time in a Bottle; Under Attack; Our Sweet Love; God Only Knows; My Lovely Celia; New; With a Little Help From My Friends; 5 Foot 9; Always on My Mind; Forever and Ever, Amen; Both Sides Now; Make You Feel My Love; Wild Mountain Time; O Waly, Waly; Somewhere; My Cup Runneth Over; American Songbook Medley; My Ship; Sehnsucht; Die Nacht;…

”Wanderlust” (also ”Travel”, ”Cities” etc.): This one is also practical since it offers the opportunity to collect music from all kinds of places, like:

Penny Lane; Wanderlust; The Road Home; Les Champs Elysées; America; Oh, What a World; Hiking Song/Highway to Hell; I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles); In My Room; Seven Bridges Road; Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer; Straighten Up and Fly Right; Why Walk When You Can Fly,…

”As Time Goes By”: This category is very nice and open, too. It can obviously include a piece like ”As Time Goes By”, but also music about different seasons of the year or moments in our life. It can be about aging and becoming grandparents, it can even include death. Here are a couple of examples:

Used to Be Young; Remember You Young; Forever Young; Time in a Bottle; This Is the Moment;, The Boy in the Bubble; Wake Me Up; One of these days; New; Sand; 9 to 5; Forever and Ever, Amen; Tuesday’s Dead; Both Sides Now; The Parting Glass; Somewhere; Ein Tag wie Gold; Sunrise, Sunset; O, What a Beautiful Mornin’; Some Other Time; Der Einsiedler; Music for a While,…

”Music from Movies and Musical Theatre”: This one’s easy to define. There’s already a specific category in my catalogue.

”Music about general philosophical questions”: Very catchy title, isn’t it? I like to collect those kind of pieces, especially for my Christmas programs, to spread them in between the ”Jesus, Mary and Joseph” sort of songs. Also, since I normally start practicing with my choir in august when nobody wants to sing Christmas repertory yet, it’s a good way to bridge this time:

Pipes of Peace; The Bridge; They Dane Alone; A Child Is Born; You Must Believe In Spring; Man in the Mirror; The Boy in the Bubble; If I Ever Lose My Faith; Wake Me Up; Both Sides Now; One of these days; Tuesday’s Dead; Imagine/What a Wonderful World; Il nous faut regarder; My Lord, What a Morning; How Can I Keep From Singing; Oh, What a World; Somewhere; Der Einsiedler; Send me an Angel,…
